We are currently building our chinampa, the Algae Inactivator, which is a floating garden. We will use our chinampa as our method to reduce phosphorus and algae in the water. Our chinampa has four algae eliminating components included.
Daphnia: Daphnia are macroscopic crustaceans that consume algae at a microscopic level.
Plants: Plants have the ability to absorb nutrients (such as phosphorus) and use them to grow and flourish, while also stopping algae and/or potential algal blooms.
Mycofiltration: Mycofiltration is the use of mycelium fungal root networks that are also used to filter water, absorbing nutrients such as phosphorus.
Solar Aeration: Solar aeration is the use of solar panels to aerate/oxygenate the water to lift out nutrients from the water and into the air, while creating better habitats for aquatic creatures.
